Health First Europe is a platform for raising awareness on key issues in the health domain at the European level. Since its inception in 2004, HFE has organised numerous events with the assistance of our MEP Supporters to encourage policymakers in all institutions to develop patient-centred policy.
'The State of Health in Europe'

As part of its 2013 Annual General Meeting, on 15 May Health First Europe brought together leaders in European health policy to discuss the current state of health in Europe. With the support of MEPs Marina Yannakoudakis (ECR, UK), Rebecca Taylor, (ALDE, UK) and Sean Kelly (EPP, Ireland), the event included a variety of health stakeholders to discuss current issues for patients including patient safety, the medical devices directive, and innovation in healthcare.

Advancing patient safety in the EU: Reducing healthcare associated infections

On 27 November, Health First Europe together with MEP Christofer Fjellner (EPP, Sweden) organised a follow-up roundtable debate on Advancing patient safety in the EU: Reducing healthcare associated infections in the European Parliament from 14.00 - 16.30. This event brought together high-level stakeholder to discuss the current state of infection control in Europe and the next steps for reducing HCAIs. Panelists included the World Health Organization, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the German Society for Hospital Hygiene.

Open Forum Debate: Health First Europe’s Road Map for the future of patient safety in Europe

Health First Europe held an invitation-only roundtable event on 24 April in the European Parliament from 10.00-12.30 to debate the Future of Patient Safety in Europe. Under the Sponsorship of MEP Christofer Fjellner, (EPP, Sweden), the event was chaired by HFE Honorary President John Bowis with the participation of HFE Patron and Former EU Health Commissioner David Byrne, the Health Systems and Health Threats Units of the European Commission (DG SANCO), representatives of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and HFE MEP Supporter and Member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee, MEP Karin Kadenbach (S&D, Austria). The event also included other high-level stakeholders to discuss and validate the HFE recommendations on patient safety and healthcare-associated infections.

Health First Europe Innovation Day 2011

Innovation Day was held in the European Parliament on 29 November with delegations of HFE members as a series of meetings with Members of the European Parliament on innovation policy in the EU. The discussions occurred with policymakers alongside the ongoing Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, the upcoming proposals for a Common Strategic Framework for Future EU Research and Innovation Funding and the Health for Growth Programme 2014-2020. On this occasion, Health First Europe will also release its publication "Overcoming Barriers to Innovation in Health: Examining the Drivers of Innovation."

"E-Quality in E-Health” publication launch

Health First Europe launched its’ “E-Quality in E-Health” publication in the European Parliament under the sponsorship of MEP Dr. Milan Cabrnoch (ECR, Czech Republic) and MEP Francoise Grossetete (EPP, France). The publication aimed to facilitate discussion about how to increase the uptake of e-Health technologies and provided recommendations as to how to promote the awareness and use of innovation in health.

Chronic Disease Management: Aim for an Innovative Policy “Cure”

Health First Europe’s Conference on Chronic Diseases was organised jointly with the Belgian Presidency of the European Union and was sponsored by European Parliament Members Kathleen Van Brempt (Belgium, S&D) and Miroslav Mikolasik (Slovakia, EPP). The conference focused on the barriers and opportunities for the healthcare industry in terms of chronic disease management and emphasised the need for investment in innovative healthcare solutions.

EU legislation to reduce injuries for healthcare workers

Health First Europe’s reception in the European Parliament celebrated the adoption of the Directive implementing the Framework Agreement on the prevention from sharp injuries in the hospital and healthcare sector. With the support of MEP Liz Lynne (ALDE, UK), the event highlighted the work achieved by Health First Europe in its quest to introduce pan-European binding measures for the protection of both healthcare workers and patients from needlestick and other medical sharps injuries.

From Nice to Lisbon: an important step forward for EU Health?

Health First Europe’s roundtable discussion was sponsored by MEP Nessa Childers, (S&D, Ireland) and MEP António Correia de Campos, (S&D, Portugal) and celebrated the 5th year anniversary of HFE while simultaneously initiating discussion regarding the future of EU Health policy within the framework of the new Lisbon Treaty which assigned additional powers to the European Parliament.

Training event on EU Health Policy

Health First Europe organised a training event at the European Parliament hosted by MEP Marian Harkin (ALDE, Ireland) and supported by MEP Antonyia Parvanova (ALDE, Bulgaria) to continue its contribution to the political debate on health in the EU. As its first event following the European elections in June 2009, HFE utilised this event to further contribute to the dissemination of knowledge on the current and future state of health policies in the European Union.

Health First Europe Exhibition on the future of Health

Under the patronage of MEP Elizabeth Lynne, Health First Europe displayed an exhibition in the European Parliament with the aim of rising awareness on the future of health in Europe. The topic of the exhibition was the general weaknesses in European healthcare systems which need to be rethought in order to meet current and future health challenges.

The World Health Congress brought together more than 100 health stakeholders to revitalize discussion on health issues with particular attention given to the patient perspective on the future of healthcare, innovation in healthcare and the migration of healthcare professionals. European Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou spoke at the high level conference along with speakers from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the World Health Organisation.
