HFE releases policy paper on the future of healthcare for patients

9 October 2008

On 9 October 2008, Health First Europe released its policy paper on the future of healthcare for patients during a media breakfast discussion hosted by Liz Lynne, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and HFE supporter.

The HFE was represented by Albert van der Zeijden, former Chairman of the International Alliance of Patients' Organisation and Lex Herrebrugh, European Regional Manager of the International Diabetes Federation, who, together with MEP Liz Lynne, proposed the policy paper's core messages to the media.

The policy paper calls on the EU and Member States to:

  • Put patients at the epicentre of all health-related policy initiatives
  • Ensure better and fully transparent information, (for example, on clinical trials and usage of data)
  • Ensure access to the best treatment and care
  • Guarantee patient safety by enhancing quality of standards and by setting guidelines in all healthcare delivery facilities

All speakers supported the idea of creating a EU Code of Good Practice that could voluntarily be adopted by all Member States. In this sense, Liz Lynne said that even though health policy falls under Member States' competence, most of them would understand that such a proposal makes sense.
