- Graduate in classical philology (1973). Master's degree in media studies (1986-1987). Teacher of Portuguese literature (1973-1986). Maker and presenter of television and radio programmes about the Portuguese language. Regular contributor to newspapers and news magazines.
- Vice-President of the Portuguese Writers' Union (1988-1994). Has published several works. Awarded a number of Portuguese and foreign honours.
- Since 1981, has served in various PS bodies, namely the Lisbon Federative Policy Committee, the National Committee, and the National Policy Committee; National Secretary of the PS (1988-2002 and since 2004); Chair of the Sintra Municipal PS (1998-2004); Chair of the Greater Lisbon Federation (2000-2002).
- Mayor of Sintra (1994-2002). Vice-Chairman of Lisbon City Council (1995-2002). Member of the Assembly of the Republic (1988-1994 and 2002-2004).
- Substitute (1994-1999) and full member (1999-2002) of the Committee of the Regions. Chair of the CEMR (Council of European Municipalities and Regions) Committee of Women Elected Representatives of Local and Regional Authorities (1998-2002).
